The
process
We do follow an S.O.P (standard operating procedure) :
(This is a manual to design a project as per our ideology in KOSH)
The S.O.P itself becomes the design process that we believe could generate design outcomes as per our ideology.
The ideology stated (in the about section) is something that we in KOSH have always been doing unconsciously whenever we design anything. There are a set of reasons based on the articulation and the decisions taken while designing. And this belief in rationality needs a commission on which any person working in KOSH can follow, act upon and implement while designing.
The S.O.P stated here does not mean it is the only finite number of things/procedures mentioned that would remain the same throughout the time. The procedure mentioned here is the outcome of the reflection of ourselves as designers. These procedures tend to evolve and upgrade as we do more and more projects
The Practice studio contained a commission to structure the ideology through a process of researching, reflecting, and interviewing.

Readings
These were the two books (Architecture: The story of practice by Dana Cuff and Architecture Depends by Jeremy Till ) we read and analyzed the readings to what it truly meant to say about practice and many contingencies on which architecture is depended.
The story of practice by Dana Cuff was based on her experience and research-based on varied types of practices and notions based on a practice that we are unaware of or are not conscious about.
The Book Architecture depends shows the reality of architecture and shows us many different dimensions upon which the architecture that we create literally depends upon. And explores the ideas of author to produce meaningful architecture.

Reflections
The exercise discovered many commonalities latent in the process and outcome of the design.
The reflections were to look back at our previous works and to identify who we really are as a person while we design, what patterns do we create when we design and what values the most to us when we design. These things were reflected upon through many questions by the tutors and ourselves to know what could our ideology be in the latter half of the studio.
The exercise leads to the concretization of many notions that a firm needs to have and act upon while designing.
Office Interviews
Studying 19 different offices across the country was very fruitful in terms of structuring our own offices and apply notions that come closest to our ideology through these interviews.
Out of the 19 offices that we interviewed there were 3-4 practices that come closest to KOSH as a firm. Firms like BPS Architects, Sorted Pandits, MO-OF, and Dar Wagh were some which came closest in different aspects of structure, design, space, and collaboration while designing.
Most of the time the practices reflected back their own personalities or the vibes of the main designer/ Head. And how they managed their systems of communication and yet made a difference in comparison to other practices while designing and implementing it all into the practical world.
Structuring Design Process
(This is a manual to design a project as per our ideology in KOSH)
The document here states the points/procedures that need to be followed step by step. The major procedures include :
-
The Collectibles.
-
Questioning and inquiring.
-
Forming up the project Brief.
-
Ideation/ Conception.
-
Dimensioning the ideation process.
( Below explained in detail )
Step-01_The Collectibles :
The process includes a collection of data that is needed to help you inquire and question the intention for the project.
(The below posted are the doings as per the SOP while designing the 3-studio projects)
I. State all the requirements of the project. (Through meetings, client’s feedback)
II.State the probable program of the project. (State the areas given by the client and if not provided by the client, then the areas should be stated through research, case studies and knowing well the aim of the project.)

III. State the site and its conditions – This includes all the topography study (if any), Climatic conditions (temperatures, rainfall, Sun-path analysis)
IV. Stating the issues, we mean to solve through architecture.

V. Inquiry – Dialogue (interview) with the person who is native to the site, knows the project, has experienced the space, is contextual to the proposal, and is going to be in the proposal. This knowledge of information should be noted upon their meet. This could also be an interview with the people who have been addressing societal issues and might know the answers to the issues that we are seeking for.

VI. Referencing related case studies for the project and looking for their intent and thought process in making that building. This helps to understand the intent that we try to generate for our project.

Step-02_Questioning & Inquiring :
These collectables should be then enquired well through questioning and putting forward an argument through WHAT? WHY? HOW? Of the project.
A. The questions arising about the requirements of the project – What is their needs, necessity and things that matter the most as well as what not matters too. All these should be questioned & inquired about which can be transformed or clubbed for the greater good of the project.
B. Questioning the program of the project and knowing what cross-disciplines can be transgressed into each other with a smooth transition between their atmospheres. And also building the program powerful through well-researched case studies present in the world.
C. Question the intent of the project.
D. Question what new could be evolved out through this project.
E. Question the Site and its conditions with the context.
G. Question the scope of exploration in construction details and its articulation in the proposal. (All projects might not have a scope of it, but identification of it is necessary to modify the design process according to it) (May lead to produce a wall section for the proposal prior or in between the ideation process)
H. Preparing a SWOT analysis of the project, which may include answers of the previous questions. But putting it down into a chart makes it easier to see through and refer back whenever required in the process
